Putorino School

Hawke's Bay | School Pool Renovation

Puterino School’s ageing concrete pool had been out of action for several years due to ongoing leaks caused by ground movement. Taylors Pools and Spas delivered a cost-effective solution with a new reinforced vinyl liner, clipping system and a complete upgrade of the pool’s filtration, plumbing and sanitisation systems to meet NZS 4441:2008. Completed within budget despite challenging access and limited water supply, the pool was successfully returned to the school and wider community for swimming, learning and enjoyment

Project Type: School Pool Renovation
Pool Type: Existing Concrete Pool

The Challenge

Puterino School’s swimming pool had been out of action for several years. Despite previous repairs, ongoing ground movement meant the ageing concrete pool continued to leak. The school approached Taylors Pools and Spas looking for a cost-effective way to make the pool watertight and get it back in use.

Our inspection also identified that the existing pump, filtration, sanitisation and plumbing systems were no longer up to standard. The upgrade needed to meet NZS 4441:2008, with the system designed around an Instantaneous Bather Load (IBL) of 18 bathers.

The project also came with some unique challenges. Access was regularly affected by Cyclone Gabrielle road damage, water was limited to the school’s bore supply, and numerous existing handrails needed to be incorporated into the new liner system

The Taylor-Made Solution

We designed a solution that avoided the cost of rebuilding the ageing concrete pool. A new clipping system and light blue vinyl liner were installed to create a durable, watertight internal surface.

We also completely upgraded the pool plant and plumbing to meet NZS 4441:2008 requirements. The new system included two 900mm sand filters with glass media, a 2.0HP high-flow pump and automated pH and chlorine dosing, designed to provide a 2.5-hour turnover at 510 litres per minute.

Existing handrails were carefully reinstalled with new fixings and gaskets, while new suction, return, dosing and waste plumbing was installed throughout.

The Result

After several years out of action, Puterino School’s pool was transformed into a watertight, modern swimming facility. The new liner provided a long-term solution to the leaking concrete shell without the expense of a complete pool rebuild.

The upgraded filtration, pumping, plumbing and automated dosing systems brought the pool up to the requirements of NZS 4441:2008, giving the school a reliable and easier-to-manage pool system.

We also won the Gold Award for Vinyl Lined Commercial Pool at the 2024 SPASA Awards of Excellence.

Most importantly, the pool was returned to the students and wider community, allowing them to once again learn to swim, develop essential water-safety skills and enjoy the pool during the summer months.
