Hawke's Bay | School Pool Renovation

Hastings Intermediate’s ageing swimming pool required a comprehensive renovation, including a new commercial vinyl liner, refurbished weir and upgrades to the pool plant and equipment.

During the project, unexpected leaks within the original plumbing were uncovered, requiring further investigation and repairs before the renovation could be completed.

The finished pool features a custom-made 0.75mm Aqualux liner, upgraded return plumbing, new glass filtration media, a new 2HP pump, EMEC automatic dosing system and new stainless steel ladders — delivering a refreshed and more reliable facility ready for continued school use.

The Challenge

The Hastings Intermediate pool required a significant renovation, with ageing surfaces, old handrails and fittings, and pool plant equipment in need of upgrading.

The biggest challenge, however, emerged after the new liner was initially installed. Leaks within the original plumbing became apparent, requiring the liner to be removed so the underlying problem could be properly investigated and repaired.

With much of the existing pipework concealed within the pool structure, plumbers were brought in to camera-inspect the original lines for blockages and other issues. The existing return jets also needed to be removed and sealed, with new penetrations and pipework created for replacement returns.

This added an unexpected layer of complexity to the renovation and required the team to adapt the original plan before the pool could be completed.

The Taylor-Made Solution

The renovation began with stripping out the old fittings and installing new T-Loc clipping around the pool and weir. The pool was water blasted, measured for its custom liner, and the weir refurbished with two coats of Luxapool epoxy resin paint.

Panel pad and the new Aqualux light blue liner were then installed. When the plumbing leaks became apparent, the liner was removed so the existing system could be investigated and repaired. Original return jets were removed and sealed, new return locations prepared, and 40mm pipework epoxied through the pool wall.

While completing the renovation, we also upgraded the pool plant with new glass filtration media, a new 2HP pump and an EMEC automatic dosing system with ORP and pH control.

Once the plumbing issues were resolved, the liner was installed for a second time, new stainless steel ladders fitted, and the complete system commissioned and tested.

The Process

Strip Out & Install Clipping

The old handrails and fittings were removed before new T-Loc clipping was installed around the pool perimeter, followed by the waterline clipping system around the weir.

Prepare, Measure & Paint

The pool was water blasted and measured for its custom liner. The weir was then prepared and finished with two coats of Luxapool epoxy resin paint.

Install Panel Pad & Liner

Protective panel pad was fitted across the pool walls and floor before the custom-made 0.75mm Aqualux light blue liner was installed.

Investigate & Repair Plumbing

Leaks became apparent after the initial liner installation, requiring us to engage Devine Plumbing for their expertise in helping locate and fix the leaks.

Upgrade Plant & Reinstall Liner

The three filters received new glass filtration media, and a new 2HP pump and EMEC automatic dosing system were installed. The liner was then installed for a second time and two new stainless steel ladders fitted.

Commission & Handover

With the plumbing issues resolved and renovation complete, the pool was filled and the entire system tested and commissioned before the site was cleaned and handed back ready for use.

The Result

Hastings Intermediate now has a significantly upgraded swimming facility, combining a completely renewed pool interior with improvements to the systems operating behind the scenes.

The new Aqualux liner provides a clean, watertight finish, while the refurbished weir and new stainless steel ladders give the pool a refreshed appearance.

Upgrades to the pump, filtration media and automatic chemical dosing provide a more modern and manageable pool plant system, while repairing the unexpected plumbing leaks addressed issues that could otherwise have caused ongoing problems.

Once complete, the pool was filled from the school's water supply, the system commissioned and checked, and the site cleaned and handed back ready for use.
