Hawke's Bay | School Pool Renovation

After more than 40 years of service, the concrete swimming pool at Arthur Miller School had begun losing water and was showing the signs you would expect from an ageing pool structure.

Rather than continuing to chase leaks and carry out ongoing repairs, Taylors Pools & Spas completed a full liner renovation, creating a new watertight interior while upgrading key plumbing components and retaining the existing pool structure.

The finished pool features a custom-made light blue commercial vinyl liner, new skimmers and plumbing, a refreshed platinum-grey anti-slip surround and a new solar bubble cover.

The Challenge

Arthur Miller School's concrete swimming pool had served the school well for more than 40 years, but during summer the school noticed the water level was steadily dropping.

With an ageing concrete structure, simply repairing an isolated leak wouldn't necessarily address future movement, cracking or deterioration elsewhere in the pool.

The existing skimmer boxes and plumbing also needed attention, while numerous old handrail penetrations and fittings had to be prepared before a new watertight interior could be installed.

The challenge was to retain as much of the existing pool as practical while creating a durable solution that would extend its usable life for years to come.

The Taylor-Made Solution

We renovated the existing concrete shell using a custom-made commercial vinyl liner system.

After draining the pool, our team prepared the structure, filling old handrail penetrations with epoxy and preparing the skimmer areas for new plumbing. New penetrations were core drilled, and the existing plumbing and sparge line were adapted for the liner installation.

A new T-Loc liner clipping system was installed around the perimeter before the pool was measured for its custom-made liner. Panel pad was fitted across the walls and floor, followed by the new light blue liner.

New skimmers were installed and plumbed, existing handrails reinstated, and the remaining plumbing completed.

To finish the renovation, the top of the pool was coated in platinum-grey anti-slip paint, and a new solar bubble cover was installed with full edge binding, roller connections and pull cord.

The Process

Drain & Prepare

The pool was emptied and the existing concrete shell, skimmers, handrail penetrations and fittings prepared for renovation. Clipping system installed.

Upgrade the Plumbing

New penetrations were core drilled, new skimmers installed and existing plumbing, including the sparge line, adapted for the new liner system.

Panel pad was fitted to the floor and walls.

Complete the Finishing

Existing handrails were reinstated, the pool top finished in platinum-grey anti-slip paint and a new solar bubble cover installed.

The Result

Arthur Miller School's ageing concrete pool has been transformed into a clean, watertight and refreshed swimming facility without the cost and disruption of replacing the existing pool structure.

The custom liner provides a new protective interior, while the upgraded skimmers and plumbing address key areas of the ageing system.

The light blue liner and platinum-grey anti-slip finish have also completely refreshed the appearance of the pool, while the new solar cover will help reduce heat and water loss when the pool isn't in use.


Once installation was complete, the pool was filled using tanker water and the school's water supply. The filtration system was recommissioned and checked to ensure everything was operating correctly before the site was cleaned and the completed pool handed back to the school.
