Hawkes Bay | Commercial Pool Project

The Napier War Memorial Centre’s water feature was designed as a place of remembrance and reflection, incorporating a three-tiered vanishing-edge feature and a custom Eternal Flame. Working alongside the project’s builders, Taylors Pools and Spas delivered the specialist pool plumbing and hydraulic systems required to achieve the feature’s exceptionally still, glass-like water surface. The result is a striking combination of fire and water that provides a fitting and enduring tribute to those who served and sacrificed.

The Challenge

The Napier War Memorial Centre required a pristine, reflective water feature to complement its Eternal Flame and provide a tranquil place for remembrance. The feature incorporated three levels, vanishing edges and a walkway through the centre, creating a visually impressive but technically complex water system.

Taylors worked alongside the project’s builders, with our scope focused on delivering the specialist plumbing and hydraulic installation. The shallow upper water feature, at approximately 100mm deep, made achieving consistent circulation particularly challenging while maintaining the perfectly still, mirror-like surface required.

The Taylor-Made Solution

Working from the overall project design, our team engineered and installed the water-feature plumbing and circulation system to achieve precise and consistent water flow. An SMD sand filter and a variable-speed pump were installed alongside a Chemiflow automatic dosing system to provide reliable filtration and water quality.

Multiple carefully positioned inlets were used to create a silky, controlled flow across the feature, while custom stainless-steel plates beneath the walkways allowed water to return without disturbing the reflective surface.

The system also incorporated a one-off Eternal Flame with a custom-made glass shroud, creating the striking combination of fire and water at the heart of the memorial. The variable-speed pump allowed the flow rates to be precisely controlled to balance the vanishing edges while maintaining the tranquil appearance.

The Result

The completed water feature is a striking centrepiece within the Napier War Memorial Centre, combining fire, water and architecture to create a powerful place for remembrance and reflection. The carefully controlled hydraulics produce the calm, glass-like surface envisioned for the memorial.

The three-tiered feature, vanishing edges and central walkway create an immersive experience for visitors, while the Eternal Flame provides a symbolic focal point honouring those who served and sacrificed.

Through careful hydraulic engineering and precise installation, Taylors helped bring this unique water feature to life. The quality and execution of the project were recognised with a Gold Award in the Commercial Water Display category, celebrating the finished feature and its combination of technical expertise and visual impact.
